It is the story of Elizabeth Mumbet Freeman, the enslaved African woman who had the courage and conviction to speak what was in her heart, suing for her freedom in a Massachusetts court of law. In gaining her own freedom, she set the stage for the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts in 1783.

The Victorian Ballroom Dance Workshop
The Italianate style Music Room at Wistariahurst creates an inviting atmosphere for a Victorian Ball. Observe and learn to dance the Quadrille, Mazurka, Victorian Waltz or Polka. In this dance workshop, the Victorian Quadrille Orchestra will perform original, composed music of the Victorian era accompanied by a dance troupe dressed in costumes circa 1880s. Each dances history will be discussed and then performed. The performance is followed by a how-to session for one of the Victorian dances. Supported in part by a grant from the Holyoke Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

The day culminates with a look at the dinosaur tracks located at Wistariahurst and understanding how they got there.

Candlelight Vigil - 9/11
Join us in honoring the victims of the 9/11 tragedy at a candlelight vigil on Saturday September 11th at 7 p.m. on the Belchertown Common. Also as a remembrance to all those fire fighters, police officers, and first responders, some of whom lost their lives in the line of duty on that day. Belchertown Parade and Fair Booth
We are going to have our Float in the Parade along with Paul Revere and William Dawes and the early Colonial Flags. Many volunteers are needed for character roles in period dress, flag marchers, pooper scooper, and banner holders. Let's make a statement!!!!!!! The parade runs from 10am to 11:30am approx. but participants really need to be there by 8 a.m. The 912 booth will need shifts of people to be there from noon to 10pm.

The City of Holyoke was first established in 1850 and is located in the Hampden County area. The Connecticut River runs along the city where the first of many dams was built in 1848.

Holyoke is claimed to be the “Birthplace of Volleyball” which was invented by a man named William G. Morgan at the Holyoke YMCA in 1895.Just to name a few recreational attractions there is the Volleyball Hall of Fame along with Wistariahurst Museum and a wonderful Children’s museum there is also the Holyoke Heritage State Park which includes the Mt. Park Merry Go Round and hosts “Celebrate Holyoke” a three day event that includes nationally known performers.

Holyoke residents describe the city as “The Best City by a Dam Site”.
